    Spray inside of crockpot with cooking spray. In large saucepan, combine flour, salt, pepper, onion powder and paprika. Add milk and stir with whisk until there are no lumps.

    Cook over medium heat until mixture boils and thickens. Stir in cheese until mixture is smooth, then add macaroni.

    Pour into crockpot. Cover and cook on low for 2 hours.

This homemade macaroni and cheese recipe is made in a slow cooker. It is the easiest way to make homemade mac and cheese. All you need to do is put all of the ingredients into the slow cooker and let the slow cooker do all the work.

I like to use jumbo or large elbow macaroni when I make macaroni and cheese in a slow cooker.

You can use other shapes of macaroni if you don’t have elbow macaroni. See the notes below on how to cook the macaroni.

This dish is SO simple…just throw everything in the crockpot and let it do the work for you! Scroll down for the printable recipe and video tutorial below.

  1. COMBINE. Add the uncooked noodles to the bottom of the crock pot. Put the sliced butter, cream cheese, salt and pepper on top. Then pour in the milk and heavy cream and give the mixture a stir.
  2. COOK. Place lid on top and cook on low until the pasta is tender, about 1 1/2 to 2 hours. Make sure to stir at the halfway mark.
  3. MELT CHEESE. Mix in the cheeses and then cover and let melt for another 5 to 10 minutes. Stir and enjoy!

Crock-Pot Mac & Cheese

Homemade macaroni and cheese is a process. You need to make a cheese sauce while also cooking pasta in another pot. And you'll almost definitely feel the need to make a buttery topping and bake it (even though it was already perfectly cheesy and saucy already). The amount of dishes is insane.

Enter: this slow-cooker mac & cheese. Everything&mdashincluding the pasta!&mdashcooks in a slow cooker. And in the end you have just ONE DISH to clean. Does the pasta actually cook?

Yep! Until it's perfectly al dente 😉. You just need to start checking after 2 hours, every 20 minutes or so. Pasta, if cooked too long, tends to get gummy if sits in a slow cooker for too long.

How does the sauce cook?

With the elbow noodles! The evaporated milk, whole milk, and cheeses slowly melt together into perfectly creamy sauce. You really only need to stir it once before serving.

Why evaporated milk?

About 60% of its water has been removed so it's much more concentrated, making it creamy AF. Meaning it's pretty perfect for mac and cheese.

Can I sub milk? Or what about cream?

We wouldn't. There's already a decent amount of milk in here anyways. If you only use milk, the sauce would be kinda watery and soup-like. It also wouldn't be as rich. Heavy cream has wayyy more calories and fat and would take the decadence of macaroni and cheese to a whole new (and unnecessary) level. Just stick with the evaporated milk.

Can I use different cheeses?

Totally! You just want to choose one (or three) with good melting properties. Think: mozzarella, fontina, and Monterey Jack. And stick to 4 1/2 cups total.

What temperature do I cook it at?

In your slow cooker, you'll want to go with HIGH as opposed to LOW heat.

Crock Pot Macaroni and Cheese Recipe

4 tablespoons butter
2 1/2 cups grated sharp cheddar cheese
1/2 cup sour cream
1 (10.75 oz) can condensed cheddar cheese soup
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 cup milk (I used 1%)
1/2 teaspoon dry mustard
1/2 teaspoon black pepper

I also used fresh garlic and it gave it a nice flavor!

Boil the macaroni in water for six minutes and drain . In a medium saucepan, mix butter and cheese. Heat over medium high heat and stir until the cheese melts. Spray your slow cooker with non-stick cooking spray. Combine cheese mixture, sour cream, soup, salt, milk, mustard and pepper in your slow cooker. Add the drained macaroni and stir again.

This recipe calls for whole milk and heavy cream. No evaporated milk needed!

Of course, you can use evaporated milk if you prefer. However, we love how rich and creamy the milk and heavy cream make this dish.

Extra Cheesy Crock Pot Mac and Cheese

We LOVED this recipe. It cooked up cheesy and firm like a good baked mac and cheese&hellip so good! We typically are stove top mac and cheesers in this family, but everyone loved this &ldquobaked&rdquo version. Definitely a treat we will enjoy again.

One more note before all the cheesy goodness&hellip slow cookers will cook this dish wildly different. The original recipe called for cooking it on low for 4 hours. Mine was done in 1 1/2 hours on low. It would have been burnt to a brick by 4 hours. This is NOT a fix it and forget it recipe. I highly recommend that you time your own slow cooker the first time you use this recipe to know how long yours takes and not base your time on mine or the original.

  • 6 cups uncooked macaroni
  • 8 cups shredded cheese divided into 6 cups and 2 cups
  • 8 cups milk
  • 2 Tbsp butter, cut into several pieces
  • 2 large family size cans of cream of chicken soup
  • 2 lbs cubed cooked ham


  1. Mix ingredients well in large mixing bowl except 2 cups of shredded cheese
  2. Spray crockpot with nonstick cooking spray
  3. Pour ingredients in mixing bowl into crockpot
  4. Lid and cook on high for 2 – 3 hours. Check after 2 hours to be sure macaroni doesn’t overcook.
  5. Remove lid to stir and scrape sides every so often
  6. Once macaroni is cooked al dente, unplug crockpot, add remaining 2 cups shredded cheese to the top
  7. Relid and let sit for a few minutes or until cheese is melted.

Easy Crockpot Macaroni and Cheese Recipe

3 cups milk
12 oz can of evaporated milk
3 cups shredded cheddar cheese
8 oz brick of cream cheese
16 oz box of elbow macaroni
1 tsp ground mustard
1 tsp salt
1/2 tsp black pepper

Place all in Crockpot and set heat to low. Cook for 2-4 hours or until noodles are soft and sauce is the consistency you like (slow cookers vary a lot, especially with something like pasta, so you'll have to start checking it at about 2 hours and stop once noodles are soft and sauce is the consistency you like..

NOTE: I didn't have a chance to take a picture before we devoured our mac and cheese, but I promise to get a picture of the finished product the next time I make it!
